During the flight back to Montana from the Oklahoma reservation, Little Wolf's band was down to 40 men, 47 women and 39 children. In March they left the winter campgrounds, having escaped detection by the military, and headed for the Yellowstone River. They were camped in near the Little Missouri having refrained from raids, when the unruly warrior Black Coyote returned to camp with Army horses, carrying the U.S. government brand. The chiefs wanted to avoid trouble and felt this endangered them all. Black Crane was chosen to tell Black Coyote to return the horses, but Black Coyote refused. Black Crane quirted (lashed) him for disobeying the council and Black Coyote's anger flared to where he shot and killed Black Crane. Their law stipulated that the punishment for murder was banishment and 7 of his relatives left with him. This included his wife, the famous Buffalo Calf Road woman, who had rescued her brother in the Battle of the Rosebud, his brother-in-law Whetstone and Hole in the Breast (aka Vanishing Heart). Black Coyote's judgement would prove wrong in the worst possible way. After leaving the others, his group attacked two soldiers working on a telegraph line and were caught. Three warriors were tried and sentenced to death, but they all killed themselves before they could be executed. Buffalo Calf Road woman died of dyphtheria in detention. The rest of the band under Little Wolf made it Montana and eventually the government created an annex of the Crow reservation for the Northern Cheyenne.
