James Weeks deserted in Feb. 7, 1877, but was caught a few days later. He was shot and killed Aug. 27, 1877, at Crow Agency, which was near present-day Absarokee at the time, in a fight with fellow private Bernard Golden. The circumstances of the fight are unclear. Golden remained with the 7th until Dec. 8, 1877, when he deserted and disappeared.
