'''Alexander C. Botkin''' (1844-) born in Madison, WI, grew up in Grand Rapids, WI where he began his journalistic career. He graduated at the State University of Wisconsin. When the civil war broke out, he clerked for Major Tenny, paymaster, and served to the end. Became a writer for the Milwaukee ''Sentinel'', then was city editor of the Chicago ''Times'', then managing editor. When the Milwaukee ''Sentinel'' was taken over by Sen. Carpenter in 1874, he appointed Botkin chief editor. He was forced to resign two years later because of his poor health, and was appointed [[U. S. Marshall]] of the Montana Territory by Pres. Hayes. In the winter of 1879, while on duty, he was caught in a snow storm and his lower extremities were frozen and paralyzed. He went to Wisconsin to recover, but tired of the delay in recovery and returned to his post.
