'''156. A Business Index''' There was another pamphlet put out by the Chamber of Commerce prior to Buchanan's advent in Miles City. This one was labeled "In the Heart of the Yellowstone" and covered interesting items about Miles City and Custer County. In this publication, an article appears titled "A Business Index" in which is stated the number of persons engaged in different lines of business--this should be interesting and, if you care to do it, you can make comparisons with the activities in the business world of Miles City to-day. This is the "Index" as it appeared: 2 abstract offices, 9 attorneys, 1 architect, 3 banks, 3 barber shops, 3 bakeries, 2 repair shops, 1 bill poster, 2 billiard halls, 5 blacksmiths, 2 shoe shops, 1 dealers in boots, shoes and clothing, 5 grocery stores, 3 surveyors, 3 confectioners, 3 coal merchants, 5 builders and contractors, 3 cement contractors, 3 dentists, 2 drug stores, 3 hardware and implements, 1 gunsmith, 2 harness and saddle manufacturers, 1 horse sales yard, 1 housemover, 6 hotels, 7 insurance agents and 8 real estate dealers, 1 steam laundry, 2 Chinese laundries, 3 lumber yards, 3 meat markets, 3 merchant tailors, 2 milliners, 1 music store, 2 printing offices and 3 newspapers, 2 osteopaths, 3 painters and decorators, 5 physicians, 3 plumbers, 6 restaurants, 15 saloons, 1 second hand store, 2 transfers, 2 undertakers, and 2 photographers. We know that there were not automobile garages in those days, but we did have livery stables and we wonder why some of these were not listed.
