'''44. Two Mayhem Cases in one Term of Court''' In a sparsely settled community such as ours, it was rather unusual that two cases of mayhem be docketed for trial in one term of court. But such was the case during the jury term here in Custer County in October 1915. Jim Perrington, quite a character here during his entire residency, was charged with having bitten one of his lady friends on the hand in an effort to regain possession of some money and other valuables which he claimed that she had made off with. Jim was convicted and sent to prison for the offense. One of his friends had advised Jim that so long as he had a "federal" contract (that of hauling gravel for the new postoffice building then in course of construction) that he would be immune to imprisonment. He made his plea to the Judge without avail. The other case concerned a quarrel between two ranchers in the Ismay country. During the "battle" which ensued, the complaining witness claimed that the defendant bit off the end of the witness's nose. This case was also tried before a jury, the defendant being acquitted.
