James “Jim” Boyle (15 December 1853 - 2 September 1920) enlisted in Boston, Massachusetts, on [[7 December, 1874]] had hazel eyes, auburn hair, a ruddy complexion; and was 5′ 6 3/8″” tall. He joined Company G at Shreveport, Louisiana, on [[3 February 1875]]. He received a minor wound in the back during the hilltop fight on 26 June 1876, but remained on duty with his company. He was discharged at [[Fort Meade]], Dakota Territory, on [[6 December 1879]], “a private of good character.” Boyle re-enlisted in the 7th Cavalry in Boston on [[6 January 1880]] and was assigned to Company B, which he joined at [[Fort Yates]] three months later. Promoted to corporal on 21 April 1883 but reduced to the ranks on 26 June. Went absent without leave on 5 September 1884 for 90 days. In confinement in the December and discharged on [[5 January 1885]] at Fort Yates: again, as “a private of good character.” For many years Jim Boyle worked as an orderly at St. Alexius Hospital, [[Bismarck, North Dakota]] where, following a long period of poor health, he died of chronic nephritis and hypertension 2 September 1920. He is buried in Lot 8, Row 8, Block A, St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bismarck.
