Date of enlistment: 28 September 1875 Age given at enlistment: 26 Rank: Private Company: I Location on 25 June 1876: With Custer's column James Galvan, who joined his company at Fort Totten on 29 October 1875, had grey eyes, dark hair, a dark complexion, and was 5′ 6 3/4″ tall. He was killed with Custer’s Column and is listed as J. J. GALVAN on the battle monument. A Final Statement of Private James J. Galvan’s service affairs signed by 1st Lieut. W. S. Edgerly, Commanding Company, at Fort Abraham Lincoln, 31 January 1877. DUE SOLDIER For clothing not drawn in kind … $2.20 DUE UNITED STATES For tobacco … $1.14 The above statement does not take into account basic pay due for the period May 1 to June 25, 1876 A James J. Miller, applied for a pension on 17 June 1895, claiming Galvan was his son, Michael John Miller, born in Liverpool 16 November 1848, had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion and was 5′ 9 3/4″ tall, occupation cooper. His claim was rejected because he couldn’t prove the relationship (Military Register, p. 142). The physical description of his ‘son’ given by Miller is clearly at odds with that on Galvan’s enlistment papers.
