John Kelly was a physician and surgeon of Lake City, Minnesota. Kelly had gone to California in 1849 and returned across the isthmus with his fortune in $20 gold pieces worn in a leather belt about his waist, as was the custom. He moved from Michigan to Minnesota, settling on [[Lake Pippin]] opposite the "[[Maiden Rock]]" which is on the Wisconsin side. Legend has it that an Indian maiden, not being allowed to marry whom she loved, jumped from the rock and drowned in the lake.
