Place of Birth: Scarborough Date of enlistment: 6 February 1872 Age given at enlistment: 32 9/12 Rank: Private Company: D Location on 25 June 1876: In hilltop fight Farrier John Marshall, a little older than the average new recruit, had blue eyes, light hair, a fair complexion, was 5′ 6″ tall, previously employed as a labourer. He participated in both the Yellowstone Campaign (1873) and Black Hills Expedition (1874) but due to (possibly) temporarily reporting sick was left in charge of Privates Tapley and Pittet at Fort Rice to guard Company H’s property and to tend the large garden there. After being discharged at Fort Rice on 6 February 1877, he enlisted for a second time at the same place on 3 January 1878. It appears he deserted from Fort Lincoln on 10 May 1879. Marshall’s fate is not known.
