Place of Birth: Rugby Date of enlistment: 20 January 1872 Age given at enlistment: 23 Rank: Private Company: E Location on 25 June 1876: With Custer's column Stuart Forbes enlisted in the U.S. Army, in New York, on 20 January 1872, under the name of John S. Hiley [using his brother-in-law's surname]. He had hazel eyes, brown hair, a fair complexion, was 6′ 0″ tall, previously employed as a clerk. He was assigned to the 7th Cavalry, Company E; participated in the Yellowstone Campaign (1873); the Black Hills Expedition (1874); and killed with Custer’s column at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. John Stuart Stuart Forbes is listed as J. S. HILEY on the battle monument. His true identity was not discovered until after the battle. It is misleading to refer to this trooper as Private John Stuart Stuart Forbes or even Private John Forbes Hiley as his enlistment papers, and all other entries in US Army records, show him as either ‘John S. Hiley’ or ‘J. S. Hiley.’ Stuart Forbes was the grandson (and brother) of a baronet, which strictly speaking did not make him a member of the Scottish nobility. DUE SOLDIER For retained pay up to June 30, 1872 … $5.33 For retained pay under act of May 15, 1872 … $51.50 For clothing not drawn in kind … $144.21 DUE UNITED STATES For tobacco … $1.14 [This statement does not take into account basic pay due for the period May 1 to June 25, 1876.]
