The Miles City [[U. S. Land Office]] opened [[9 Oct 1880]] on 3rd Street (now [[6th Street]]) between [[Main Street]] and [[Pleasant Avenue]]. Previously, the area was served by the Helena office. Named the "District of Yellowstone", it encompassed all Montana Territory east of 27th range, except Indian reservations. The total area (incl. reservations) is 35,000,000 acres (20,000,000 acres w/o the 15,000,000 acres in the reservations).
