Donald McIntosh Samuel McCormick had grey eyes, brown hair, a ruddy complexion, was 5′ 6 1/2″ tall, occupation morocco tanner. Apparently he gave his horse to his company commander, Lt. McIntosh, at the beginning of the retreat from the valley fight and, consequently, was left behind in the timber. He later rejoined his comrades on Reno Hill with the scout, George Herendeen and survived the battle unscathed. McCormick died on 10 September 1908, at the Post Hospital, Fort Meade and was buried in Bear Butte Cemetery, near Sturgis, South Dakota.
