The United States Army (USA) is the main branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for land-based military operations. It is the largest and oldest established branch of the U.S. military, and is one of seven U.S. uniformed services. The modern army has its roots in the Continental Army which was formed on 14 June 1775, to meet the demands of the American Revolutionary War before the establishment of the United States. The Congress of the Confederation officially created the United States Army on 3 June 1784<ref name=Army_History>{{Cite journal |publication-date=15 November 2004 |title=Army Birthdays |publisher=United States Army Center of Military History |url=http://www.history.army.mil/faq/branches.htm |accessdate=Jun 2010<!--based on date of introduction; see oldid=365887842--> |archiveurl=http://web.archive.org/web/20100420124819/http://www.history.army.mil/faq/branches.htm |archivedate=20 April 2010 |postscript=<!-- Bot inserted parameter. The army considers itself to be descended from the Continental Army and thus dates its inception from the origins of that force.
